The Jaguar XKE is one of the most iconic designs from the golden age of sports cars. Few cars have such immediately recognizable styling. The E-Type design has the DNA of Jaguars successful D-Type race cars and awed automotive journalists when it was introduced in 1961 with a monocoque body, front sub-frame for the engine and suspension, and the independent rear suspension with inboard brakes. With its race-proven motor and all-wheel disc brakes, the performance set new standards. U.S. safety regulations mandated the facelift for the Series II cars in late 1967. Regrettably, the E-type lost its trademark glass covered headlights and gained a larger front air intake. Bumpers were raised and the tail lights were moved below the rear bumpers. The cooling system, marginal in Series I cars, was upgraded with dual electric fans and the brakes also gained bigger calipers. Emission regulations necessitated a change from triple SU to dual Stromberg carburetors and horsepower dropped from 265 hp to 245 hp. The Series II cars are more user-friendly with the aforementioned mechanical improvements, and the improved cooling made AC a practical and desirable option.
Jaguar E-Types are among the most collectible British sports cars and well-sorted examples are delightful to drive. This is a superb example.
